Your Sports Team Interview

By Interviewer at 04/14/08 16:27

Name of your website?

Your Sports Team

Your name?

Jason

Your Location (city, etc)

Milwaukee

Please give us a short summary of your website?

It's a great place to find local sports news right from every team's local newspaper. Most sites only give you a national perspective, but here, you can easily get the hometown point of view of any team.

What inspired you to launch your own website?

I wanted to give sports fans an easier way to really get the most localized news that I could. Even when you go to a big name sports news site, their team pages still have a national spin on them. I thought, who better to get the news from than local reporters. And I have gotten positive results from it.

When did you launch your first website, and what was it?

This was my first website and was launched February 2008.

How did you decide on a name for your website?

I wanted something that said "local". So "Your Sports Team" seemed a logical choice.

What makes it different from other, similar offerings?

Besdides the standard national news, there is an easy way to get your sports newspaper headlines from ever sports team in the country.

What is your eventual goal? (To sell it, keep it for income, secure a book or other mainstream media deal?)

I'd like to keep it. Sports has always been a passion of mine and it's fun to build it as I go and see how I can make it grow.

How does your investment of time and money balance against your success?

It's just now starting to pay off. I spent about 200 hours working on the site and my hits are finally starting to increase.

If you had an unlimited development budget for development, how would you change your site?

That's easy. I would have my own national feed for the main page and would have a much fancier overall design.

If your site got really big, really quickly, would you be able to keep up with the demand?

If got that big, I would make the time and effort to keep up.

What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?

Since my budget is literally nothing, site promotion is a big pain. It's hard with no money to promote your site.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Working without a budget.

What method has been most successful for promoting your website?

Link referral sites are useful, and posting on other sports sites gets interest as well.

How has running your website differed from your expectations?

It really hasn't. I knew what I was getting into, and it has lived up to my expectations.

How long have you run the site already, and how long will you continue to keep it up if you don't enjoy big gains in traffic, income or popularity?

It's only been two months, and I don't see myself giving up anytime soon.

What's the point of a website that just sends you to a newspaper site?

It may seem like a simple idea, but that's kind of the point. Don't waste time searching for your team's local news when it's all in one place here. I love ESPN as much as the next guy, but you will see what kind of insight you're actually missing once you use this site.

What is your website address?

Your Sports Team
