On December 31, before the clock hit midnight, three extreme athletes performed stunts to ring in the new year on the Las Vegas strip. 27 year old daredevil Robbie Maddison followed up his history-making motorcycle distance jump with another world-first performance at the "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits."Robbie was in Las Vegas to attempt to jump and land his dirt bike on top of the 96-foot high scale version of the Arc de Triomphe at the Paris Hotel and Casino. He hopped up 120 feet and landed safely on his target on the top of the landmark. He then looked down at his landing ramp, circled the top, then he dropped 50 feet off the Arc onto a landing ramp and successfully stayed on his bike.
At the end of the stunt he had injured his hand. When he pulled his glove off his hand was bleeding. He said that the gash was cut right to the bone and he thinks he broke it.
Before Maddison's jump, 36-year-old stunt driver Rhys Millen backflipped an offroad truck. The back flip was successful but rolled the truck on the landing. The vehicle landed on its right wheels first, and ended up on its side. He was very disappointed that he didn't drive away.
Robbie Knievel, the son of the late Evel Knievel, launched the height of a man made volcano perched in front of The Mirage hotel-casino on a motorcycle for a television special.
