This morning I was watching the news and learned about an interesting story in Kentucky. Back in August a 16 year old boy died after an incident during football practice. Max Gilpin collapsed due to the heat during practice. He died three days later in the hospital.
David Jason Stinson, the head football coach at Pleasure Ridge Park, is being charged with reckless homicide. A grand jury indicted Stinson on Thursday. According to reports, about 5 to 8 minutes prior to Max collapsing, another high school football player at the practice collapsed because of the heat. Prosecutors say that should have been enough warning to stop practice.
I don't think the coach should be charged with anything in this case. I feel real bad about what happened, but it was an accident.
High school football should be a learning experience... that is what high school is all about.
Maybe sometimes it goes from being a learning experience to a situation of winning at all costs.
Let's not try to second guess the prosecutor in this case, or under estimate the wisdom of a jury.
